saw this on an other site,,,,,,,
I've learned recently that one of the most beloved and
commercialized holidays IS NOT A NATIONAL HOLIDAY!!! I believe this must change because...
1.It's the 2nd most commercialized holiday, next to Christmas
2. Americans have spent 5.4 billion dollars on Halloween in 2006
3. It's not just the kids anymore: "Halloween's growing popularity among adults. Of the 8,000 adult consumers it surveyed this year, 64 percent said that they plan to celebrate Halloween in some way this year, up from 52 percent in 2005."- nctimes.com
4.WE DESERVE A DAY OFF! why wait every 6 years for it to be on a weekend??!!
5. Halloween has a deep history, deeper then the independence of America (the history of Halloween began in 800 AD)
INSTANCE!!
"it is called Samhain which marks one of the two great doorways of the Celtic year, for the Celts divided the year into two seasons: the light and the dark, at Beltane on May 1st and Samhain on November 1st. Some believe that Samhain was the more important festival, marking the beginning of a whole new cycle, just as the Celtic day began at night. For it was understood that in dark silence comes whisperings of new beginnings, the stirring of the seed below the ground. Whereas Beltane welcomes in the summer with joyous celebrations at dawn, the most magically potent time of this festival is November Eve, the night of October 31st, known today of course, as Halloween."
6."Polls indicate that about 80 percent of Americans participate in trick-or-treat activities" (NCA poll).
7. Several have said that it's not a national holiday because it doesn't follow the pattern of a Christian background (Christmas, Easter....ect.) But take Thanksgiving into consideration
8. it does have Christian background, "The term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before "All Hallows' Day" (also known as "All Saints' Day")." - Wikipedia
9. Halloween is more well known then other "National" holidays.....like National Library Week (April 1-6)
10. Christmas has pagan roots tied to it's traditions (not unlike any other holiday, from what I've looked up)
"The Christmas tree tradition has many roots. The Romans contributed, and the pagan Germans (who later became Christians) also had solstice celebrations honoring trees. They, however, left the trees in the woods.
According to legend, the Protestant reformer Martin Luther was the first to decorate a tree indoors. One night, walking in the woods, he saw stars twinkling through evergreen branches. He brought a tree home and decorated it with candles to show his children the dazzling sight"

So to view Halloween as the only "Pagan rooted" holiday is unfair
11. We all need an escape from ourselves every once and a while. I think if Halloween would be recognized as a national holiday then more people would take full advantage of the day.Now (if your not ages 1-12) it's seen as a taboo to participate, but i think older ladies and gentlemen would be more inclined to dress up if they knew that even the sticks in the government thought it was okay.
12. All holidays have pagan AND puritan roots so there is no reason not to make Halloween a national holiday
more points to come......JOIN! This group needs to be passed on so it will grow
(Remember National holiday= day off, with the exception of Martin Luther King Day)
